Selected Data from My Research

Public Data on High-Skilled Immigration and International Education in the US

  1. Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS)
    • New and stock of international undergrad students by school by year
    • Stock of international graduate students (sum of MA and PhD) by school by year
    • Degrees conferred to international students by degree level by major by school by year
    • Graduation and transfer rates of international undergrad students by school by year
    • Notes:: International students are defined as temporary visa holders (including F-1 and J-1). Data are self-reported by schools to annual surveys conducted by NCES. Responses are mandatory for all Title IV postsecondary institutions. Fall enrollment.

  2. Institute of International Education (IIE)
    • Stock of international students by academic level by place of origin by year
    • Stock of international students by field of study by place of origin by year
    • New international students by academic level by year

  3. US Department of State
    • Visa issuance by visa class by year by place of origin (1997--current)
    • Visa refusals and workloads by visa class by year (2013--current)
    • B visa refusal rate by year (2006--current)
    • Notes: F-1 and J-1 visa issuance measure neither new nor stock of international students. First, Visa validation length varies by place of origin, time, and program of study. Second, even if an F-1 visa expires, students already in the US do not need to renew visas until they travel internationally (as long as their degree program has not ended).
